UNDERGROUND RAILROAD MARITIME MEMORIAL WALKWAY
The Professional Women’s Network for Service (PWNS) Launches Brick Campaign to Commemorate and Revitalize Racine’s Role in the Pre-Civil War Freedom Movement
Professional Women’s Network for Service, Inc. (PWNS) is enhancing the Underground Railroad Maritime Memorial Walkway at Gaslight Point Lakewalk Circle, in Racine, Wisconsin. The project includes a brick paved walkway around the current monument commemorating the site wherein Joshua Glover and more than 100 fugitive slaves boarded abolitionist-friendly ships and escaped to Canada during the 1850’s aided by Achas P. Dutton, a Racine grainery merchant, who served as an Underground Railroad “Conductor.”
PWNS unveils a Commemorative Brick Campaign extending from February 21- May 1, 2011, followed by dedication activities in June 2011. The campaign seeks individuals, families, organizations, institutions, and businesses to take part in a history making event.
Commemorative bricks (for more information click on the pic to the left) can be inscribed with your name or as a wonderful way to mark a special occasion or memorialize loved ones. Your participation means you can have your relatives, friends, colleagues and heroes names permanently etched in brick signifying their support for the cause for freedom:
- Individuals or families – Dedicate bricks in memory of an ancestor who supported the cause of freedom
- Organizations – Show your support of freedom for all mankind
- Institutions – Show your dedication to recognizing important events in history
- Businesses – Show your support for diverse opportunities in the workplace
